Debris Disposal

Areas impacted by a severe weather event, hazardous material spills, floods, fires or power outages often have increased levels of debris following the incident. Proper disposal of refuse, yard materials, and other affected items can minimize further risks in the midst of recovery efforts.

Debris & Household Item Disposal
Landfill Facility
Yard matter (limbs, brush, twigs, etc.), general household goods, food items, and construction/demolition debris may be deposited at
The Campbell County Livestock Road Landfill facility
427 Livestock Road
Rustburg, VA 24588

The landfill is open from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday - Saturday.

In the event of a local disaster, please do not take yard debris, affected appliances, or larger household goods to area convenience centers; these items should be deposited at the main landfill site.

In addition to household trash, this drop-off center accepts clean brush, tires, appliances, small bulky items, oil, batteries and other recyclables. Waste acceptance policies can be found in Chapter 12 of the Campbell County Code.

Upon arrival, please follow the indicated traffic patterns and check with the site attendant for directions on where to dispose of tires, brush and white goods (appliances).

Preparing for Clean-Up Efforts
  • Keep an extra box of heavy-duty garbage bags on hand. Store work gloves, steel-toed boots, safety glasses/goggles, breathing masks, and other protective gear in easily accessible places.
  • Check saws, log splitters, and other equipment at least once a year to ensure it is working properly; replace/repair any dysfunctional tools.
  • Check your property each season for weakened limbs, dead trees, and other hazards. Safely remove any elements that could cause damage or injury.
  • Obtain and store rubber gloves and other disinfectants/cleaning agents in case of contamination. Carefully read instructions on cleaning chemicals to avoid affixation and skin burns.
Post-event Cleaning & Recovery
  • Do not enter damaged areas if downed power lines, flood waters, or hazardous materials still pose a threat; wait until safety officials confirm the area is safe to begin clean-up tasks.
  • Do not enter standing water surrounding impacted areas as it may contain contaminates such as sewage or hazardous materials. Ask local officials if household water sources are safe for drinking and cleaning.
  • Use extra caution if sawing limbs/trees/brush; take frequent breaks and avoid getting overheated and dehydrated, even in winter. Be sure to wear protective covering at all times if cutting and/or loading debris.
  • Secure any loads of refuse/debris in vehicles with proper restraints to avoid losing items on highways (which can create additional hazards).
  • Wear gloves to place any out-of-temperature food and other contaminated items in double garbage bags; likewise throw away any food or beverage items (including cans) that have come in contact with flood waters, fires, chemicals, etc.
  • Never taste food or rely on appearance or odor to determine its safety. Some foods may look and smell fine, but if they have been at room temperature too long, bacteria causing food-borne illnesses can start growing quickly. Some types of bacteria produce toxins that cannot be destroyed by cooking.
  • Wipe down exposed areas with approved disinfectants (bleach, Lysol, etc.), according to manufacturer's instructions. Do not mix cleaning chemicals as some may cause toxic fumes.
  • Wash hands and exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Place exposed/contaminated clothing, shoes or other items in tightly sealed containers; do not allow them to make contact other materials.
  • Contact your physician for instructions on how to dispose of contaminated or out-of-temperature medicines. Do not take any medication that has been affected.
  • If you employ cleaning/construction crews to restore your home, ensure they are bonded/legitimate agencies. Check references to avoid scams, which often prey on residents following a disaster.
