Community Description

Altavista, with a population of approximately 3,400, is located in the southwestern part of Campbell County, approximately 20 miles south of Lynchburg on U.S. Highway 29. Altavista’s business community offers a full range of retail and service firms and a diversified manufacturing segment. A nonprofit facility, the Sheltered Workshop, provides special employment opportunities for the disabled. Motel and bed-and-breakfast accommodations are available for overnight guests. The town has a volunteer fire department, a volunteer EMS squad, two physicians, and four dentists.

Governing Body

Altavista is governed by a seven member Town Council, and its daily operations are guided by a Town Manager. Office hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Services

The town provides water, sewer, law enforcement, and garbage collection services to its residents. Altavista’s students are served by one elementary school (pupil teacher ratio of 19:1) and one combined high school / middle school (pupil teacher ratio of 13:1).

Recreational & Tourist Attractions

Altavista also has a variety of recreational and tourist attractions. There are 61 acres of local park land in Altavista with facilities including English Park, Shreve Park, a boat launch, fishing piers, walking paths, baseball fields, basketball courts, picnic areas, and playgrounds. Other recreation choices are available at a local golf course and a YMCA. The YMCA provides a full complement of facilities as well as day care for children ages two years old and older.

History

Those interested in history will enjoy Altavista’s museum, Avoca, located at 1514 Main Street. A decorated country Victorian Queen Anne style house, Avoca contains Civil War memorabilia and Native American artifacts. It is the home site of Revolutionary War patriot Col. Charles Lynch. The museum and the growing economy are two examples of the way in which Altavista is living up to its town mission statement.
