About Sheriff Steve A. Hutcherson
Steve was hired by Sheriff Sowell and began his law enforcement career as a field deputy.
He was a field deputy for three years before being promoted to Investigator by Sheriff Maxey. He served the Campbell Co. Sheriff’s Office for ten years as Investigator. Hutcherson was assigned to the Regional Homicide Squad in 1984. For six years he was assigned to the Lynchburg Regional Drug Task Force investigating drug trafficking throughout central Virginia. While assigned to the Drug Task Force he made undercover purchases of drugs, conducted surveillance of suspected drug dealers, executed search warrants, was involved in two wiretap investigations, and investigated several drug conspiracies that were prosecuted in the federal judicial system. He investigated or assisted in the investigation and prosecution of several hundred suspects. He was assigned to a federal task force that investigated a drug conspiracy also. While an Investigator, Hutcherson applied and received an anti-drug grant to assist with drug enforcement in the county. Investigator Hutcherson also siezed over $200,000 in illegal drug assets while working with the Task Force.
Steve left the Sheriff’s Office in 1993 and accepted a position as patrolman with the Altavista Police Department. Hutcherson applied for an anti-drug grant at Altavista and received the grant to assist with the arrest and prosecution of drug offenders. Over 200 arrests were made over the course of the four year grant program. Hutcherson was promoted to Sergeant in 1995 and then promoted to Captain in 1997 when Captain Brown retired. Steve served the Altavista Police Department as Captain until December of 2003 when he left to accept the position of Chief Deputy of the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office January 1, 2004. Sheriff Gaddy appointed him to the position when he took over as Sheriff.
Sheriff Gaddy announced his retirement in 2011 and Steve announced his intentions to campaign for the position of Sheriff. Sheriff Hutcherson won the election with over 85% of the vote and officially became Sheriff on January 01, 2012.
Sheriff Hutcherson lives in the Lynch Station area of the county. His wife’s name is Molly and they have two daughters. They are members of Lynch Station Baptist Church. Steve serves the church as a deacon and teaches the Adult Sunday School class. He is a past President of the Lynch Station Ruritan Club and sits on the Board of Directors. He received the Ruritan of the Year Award in 2003 and the President’s Award in 2005.
