CAMPBELL COUNTY SOCIAL SERVICES SPONSORS 'HUG CHALLENGE' DURING NATIONAL CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION MONTH

RUSTBURG, VA - The month of April is designated as National Child Abuse Prevention Month; an annual observance since 1983 dedicated to raising awareness and preventing child abuse.

Across the nation, social workers are dedicated to the belief that every child has the right to safe, healthy, and nurturing environments. As child abuse affects 121,787 families in Virginia, the Campbell County Department of Social Services (DSS) is encouraging families to do their part to make sure our children are safe and loved.

For instance, a practical way to prevent child abuse and create strong bonds in your own family is to hug your children and remind them of how loved they really are.

So, Campbell County DSS is pleased to offer families an opportunity to participate in a 'Hug Challenge' this month, for a chance to win a prize.

For the month of April, families are invited to hug their children 12 times a day, complete a calendar, and drop it off at their local Campbell County library branch, or to DSS contact, Katelyn Mullins, Family Services Specialist via email at: katelyn.mullins@dss.virginia.gov.

"Hugging is a form of touch that is important to the emotional, and physical development of children," said Tanita Anthony, Family Services Specialist with Campbell County DSS. "Hugging makes children feel safe and secure, makes them smarter, boosts self-esteem, and creates happiness. Everyone can benefit from a hug. It’s really a win-win situation for all!"

A flyer and calendar is available online in both English and Spanish, and we encourage families to share their 'Hug Challenge' on social media.

"Sharing their challenge calendar is a great way to create accountability," notes Katelyn Mullins. "It helps spread awareness of our overall mission, helps your 'circle' keep track of your progress, and may also encourage other families to take part in our challenge."
