START SMALL CAMPBELL GRANT PROGRAM AWARDS $5,000 TO HUCKLEBERRY KNOB NURSERY

Campbell County Economic Development's Start Small Campbell Grant Program awarded a $5,000 grant to Huckleberry Knob Nursery (HKN) during the Campbell Connects event at Tru by Hilton on November 9, 2023.

Huckleberry Knob Nursery (HKN) is a boutique nursery that opened in March 2022 at 1469 Sunnymeade Road in the Candlers Mountain area. Scott and Amanda MacLeod saw a need for a retail nursery that would serve not only Campbell County, but also the greater Lynchburg area. With more than 20 years in the green industry and a passion for creating beautiful spaces, the owners want to make HKN the premier destination for nursery materials. HKN strive to offer a diverse selection of plants that you cannot find at other local garden centers. HKN will soon begin offering workshops and classes for the community to learn more about plant care, planting, pruning and many other aspects of landscape and gardening.

MacLeod indicated the grant money would be put to use in building a pavilion on the nursery’s grounds to host workshops and events. The grant funds, according to MacLeod, will “allow us to begin these offerings to the community at a much faster pace and allow us to see growth moving into Spring 2024.”

Start Small Campbell Grant Program offers a $5,000 grant for new businesses or businesses opening for the first time in Campbell County. To be eligible, business owners submit an online application that includes a detailed business plan. Other requirements include an in-person business consultation session and two Start Up Toolbox online business training courses from the Small Business Development Center – Lynchburg Region. Up to four $5000 grants are offered each year. HKN is the 6th Campbell County business to receive this grant. The next application cycle closes March 1, 2024.
