A Shining Star of Leadership: Mitch Hubbard Recognized for Cross-Training Initiative

RUSTBURG, VA - In the Campbell County organization, there are individuals who truly make a difference not only for our community, but for their individual team. One such individual is Mitch Hubbard, a wise and compassionate leader who has taken it upon himself to elevate the skills and abilities of his colleagues through cross-training efforts. His dedication to lifting others up is a beacon of inspiration, and his passion for this initiative is contagious.

Over the past several months, Mitch has taken the initiative to cross-train the Parks & Recreation team on the key aspects of field maintenance. This ensures all team members have the skills and confidence to undertake these tasks so that our facilities will always be prepared for public service and contingencies are in place (mowing, setting bases, marking fields, etc.). Likewise, he has been working with Ethan Driskill and Drew Patsell, Youth Program Coordinators, on electrical provisions for on-site vending machines and future amenities.  Proceeds from these vending machines are slated to provide funding for Recreation program scholarships for children in need.

Mitch's approach to cross-training is not just about filling knowledge gaps or checking off boxes on a to-do list. Rather, it is a genuine desire to see his team members grow and develop in their roles, and to watch the department as a whole become stronger and more effective as a result. His leadership is marked by wisdom, empathy, and a deep understanding of what it takes to build a high-performing team with confidence.

“One of the most impressive aspects of Mitch's cross-training is how it has brought the department together,” said Mackenzie Dodds, Parks & Recreation Manager.   "Mitch’s enthusiasm and commitment to this effort – and team – is unmistakable, and his willingness to roll up his sleeves and get involved in every aspect of the process has created a sense of ownership and investment among team members."

The result of Mitch's efforts is a uniquely collaborative environment where team members feel valued, supported, and motivated to continue learning and growing.

For those of us who have had the pleasure of working alongside Mitch, we can attest to his ability to bring out the best in those around him,” added the team. “He is always open, encouraging and willing to lend a listening ear or offer guidance when needed.”

By sharing knowledge and expertise across roles, Mitch has made our organization more versatile, adaptable and resilient. Staff is better equipped to handle unexpected challenges and opportunities, and more confident in their ability to deliver exceptional service to our collective community.

Ever humble, Mitch asked to recognize his team of ‘Young Guns,’ instead and would rather acknowledge their abilities to take on new and challenging tasks than be in the spotlight. His team, however, would rather highlight his wisdom, and leadership, as the impact of Mitch's cross-training initiative extends far beyond individual skill development.

He is a shining example of what it means to be an exceptional leader and consistently demonstrates this with his commitment to coaching and supporting others.  Mitch, thank you for being a true mentor and role model!  Your grateful team of ‘Young Guns’ salute you!
