CCSO Arrests Suspect After Attempted Break-In at Cross Point Church;
Multiple Charges Filed
RUSTBURG, VA - On March 17, around 8:24 PM, Campbell County Sheriff’s Office responded to 150 Alum Springs Road for a subject, later identified as Matthew Brady, attempting to break into Cross Point Church with a pickaxe. Several of the church members observed that Brady had the axe in his possession so they sheltered themselves inside the building.
On arrival, a deputy attempted to make contact with Brady. Brady began to walk toward the 7-Eleven gas station not complying with the deputies’ commands. Brady walked into the roadway of Alum Springs Rd. The deputy commanded Brady several times to drop the pickaxe and to get out of the roadway. Brady failed to comply with the deputies’ orders.
Another deputy who was driving up to the scene observed Brady in the roadway armed with a pickaxe threating another deputy. In response to Brady’s threatening behavior, the deputy slowed his vehicle, struck Brady, disarming the pickaxe from his possession. Deputies at the scene attempted to take Brady into custody.
Brady was combative and resisted arrest. After Brady was taken into custody, he was transported to the emergency department with minor injuries. Brady was released into our custody this morning.
Brady was charged with the following:
- Disorderly conduct
- Assault on law enforcement without battery
- Obstruction of justice (2 counts)
