Campbell County Sheriff's Office Successfully Resolves Armed Standoff in Evington; Subject in Custody
RUSTBURG, VA - At approximately 8:30 PM, deputies from the Campbell County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) were dispatched to a residence on Pacoman Road in Evington, VA, to conduct a welfare check.
Upon initial contact, the subject, identified as Ronald Lee Day, Jr., age 50, displayed a firearm, voiced threatening comments and discharged one round before retreating back inside the residence. Deputies immediately established a secure perimeter around the property, and additional law enforcement units responded to the scene.
The CCSO Special Response Team and the Lynchburg Police Department Tactical Team were activated and assisted in securing the location. After several hours of negotiations involving trained negotiators from the CCSO Crisis Negotiations Team, and the use of chemical agents to assist with Mr. Day's surrender, he was taken into custody without further incident.
Ronald Lee Day, Jr. has been charged with reckless handling of a firearm. He was transported to Blue Ridge Regional Jail, where he is being held without bond.
The Campbell County Sheriff's Office expresses sincere gratitude to the Lynchburg Police Department, Virginia State Police, Campbell County Department of Public Safety, Lyn-Dan Heights Volunteer Fire Department (Company 15), and Evington Volunteer Fire Department (Company 17) for their invaluable assistance in resolving this incident safely.
