CCSO CARE Alert: Scam Season is Back - Stay Alert!
RUSTBURG, VA -
The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to two active scams currently circulating in our community.
1. DMV Fine / Toll Scam
Residents are reporting fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or tolling authorities. These messages often state that the recipient has outstanding fines or fees and include a link to make payment. These messages are not legitimate. The DMV does not notify individuals of fines or toll violations via unsolicited text messages.
- Do not click on any links.
- Do not provide personal or financial information.
2. Paving & Driveway Scams
The Sheriff’s Office has also received reports of paving scams within Campbell County. In these incidents, individuals approach homeowners offering to pave or seal driveways. After performing little to no work, the scammers demand a large payment.
Residents are reminded:
- Always verify that any contractor holds a valid Campbell County business license.
- If you are unsure, do not provide payment.
- Contact the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office for assistance if approached by suspicious individuals.
Sheriff Whit Clark urges all residents to remain vigilant.
“Scammers continue to prey on our community in a variety of ways. The best protection is awareness—if something seems suspicious or too good to be true, it likely is.”
