CCSO CARE Alert: Project Lifesaver Program to Protect Vulnerable Residents

RUSTBURG, VA - The Campbell County Sheriff's Office is a proud member of Project Lifesaver International, a public safety initiative aimed at locating and rescuing individuals with cognitive conditions who are prone to wandering, such as those with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, or other disorders.

The program equips enrolled individuals with a small, wrist-worn radio transmitter. If the individual goes missing, specially trained deputies from the Sheriff’s Office can use tracking equipment to locate the individual quickly—typically within 30 minutes.

"When someone you love goes missing, every second counts,” said Sheriff Whit Clark. “Project Lifesaver gives us the tools to respond faster and more effectively, ensuring the safe return of our most vulnerable residents.”

How It Works:

Each participant is fitted with a personalized transmitter that emits a unique frequency. In the event of a disappearance, trained personnel from the Sheriff’s Office use directional antennae and tracking technology to pinpoint the individual’s location, significantly reducing search time and increasing the likelihood of a positive outcome.

The service is free of charge for eligible Campbell County residents and is supported through grants, donations, and community partnerships.

“This program is about peace of mind—for families, caregivers, and the community,” said Lieutenant Corbett, program coordinator. “It empowers families while giving our team the tools we need to keep people safe.”

How to Enroll:

Families and caregivers interested in enrolling a loved one in Project Lifesaver can contact the Sheriff’s Office at 434-332-9580 for details, eligibility, and an application form.

Be alert. Be safe. Spread the word.
