CCSO CARE Alert: CCSO Cautions Residents Against Package 'Brushing' Scams - Think Before You Scan

RUSTBURG, VA - The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of an emerging scam known as a “Brushing Scam”.

A “brushing scam” happens when scammers send you packages you didn’t order to post fake reviews and boost product sales.  Scammers misuse your address to make the purchase look real, and QR codes or links inside may expose you to identity theft or malware.  Citizens should  avoid engaging to protect your personal information.

Recently, law enforcement agencies across the country have reported cases of individuals receiving unsolicited packages in the mail, often from online retailers like Amazon. Inside these packages, recipients may find inexpensive items accompanied by a “Thank You” note that includes a QR code.

While these deliveries may appear harmless or even like a free gift, they are in fact a scam tactic designed to steal your information.

How the Scam Works

Scammers mail out random packages to real addresses that they did not order. Along with the items, a note often instructs the recipient to:

  • Scan a QR code to “see who sent it,”
  • “Claim a reward,” or
  • “Thank the sender.”

By using your mailing address, scammers are able to create fake online sales records and reviews—a deceptive practice that boosts product rankings and makes fraudulent sellers appear legitimate.

The Dangers

  • Phishing Websites: Scanning the QR code may redirect you to a fake website designed to capture personal or financial information.
  • Malware Risks: Certain QR codes can install malicious software on your phone or computer.
  • Identity Use: Scammers exploit your address to falsify product sales, which may lead to future unsolicited shipments.

What You Should Do

  • Do NOT scan the QR code.
  • Do NOT provide any personal information related to the package.
  • If you receive a package you did not order, treat it as suspicious.
  • Report unusual packages to the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office at (424) 332-9580.

Be alert. Be safe. Spread the word.
