Campbell County Sheriff’s Office Warns Community of Jury Duty Scam Targeting Residents

RUSTBURG, VA - The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office is alerting citizens about an ongoing phone scam in which callers falsely claim that residents have missed jury duty. The scammers threaten victims with arrest, fines, or jail time unless immediate payment is made.

In one recent case, the scammer insisted that the individual remain on the phone throughout the entire interaction to ensure payment was made. Even as the victim attempted to text law enforcement for help, the scammer pressured him not to involve real authorities. This tactic is used to isolate the victim and prevent them from verifying the caller’s claims.

Scammers often impersonate law enforcement officers or court officials and demand payment through prepaid debit cards, gift cards, wire transfers, or other untraceable methods. These demands are a scam. The Campbell County Sheriff’s Office and the court system will never call citizens to request payment or personal financial information over the phone.

What Citizens Should Do:

  • Do not provide personal or financial information to unsolicited callers.

  • Do not send money in the form of gift cards, wire transfers, or prepaid debit cards.

  • Hang up immediately if pressured to stay on the line.

  • Verify any official notices by contacting the Campbell County Circuit Court directly at 434-332-9517.

  • Report suspicious calls to the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office at 434-332-9580.

The Sheriff’s Office is working to raise awareness of this scam to help prevent residents from becoming victims. Citizens are encouraged to share this information with family, friends, and neighbors, particularly older adults who are often targeted.
