Campbell County Public Safety Provides Update on Cybersecurity Incident Affecting CodeRED Emergency Notification System
RUSTBURG, VA - Campbell County Public Safety is issuing this update to inform residents about a cybersecurity incident that impacted the OnSolve CodeRED emergency notification platform, a system previously used by the County to disseminate urgent alerts to the community.
OnSolve has confirmed that the incident—carried out by an organized cybercriminal group—resulted in damage to the CodeRED platform and may have involved the removal of subscriber data from their systems. While a forensic investigation is still ongoing, OnSolve has advised that some of this data may have been published online. At this time, law enforcement has been notified and continues to support the investigation.
Key Information We Have Received from OnSolve
An organized cybercriminal group has taken responsibility for the incident.
Data associated with the CodeRED platform appears to have been removed, though the exact scope and elements of the data are still being confirmed.
The OnSolve CodeRED platform has been permanently decommissioned and will not be restored.
The incident was contained to the CodeRED environment, with no indication of impact to connected systems.
Potential Password Exposure
OnSolve has informed Campbell County Public Safety that the removed data may include subscriber information.
Residents who reused their CodeRED password on any other personal or business accounts are strongly encouraged to change those passwords immediately as a precautionary measure.
Temporary Suspension of Weather and Emergency Alerts
Because the CodeRED system has been decommissioned, Campbell County is temporarily unable to send weather warnings or other mass notifications until our new emergency alert system is fully operational. We understand the importance of timely alerts and are working urgently to bring the new system online.
Notification will be issued to the public as soon as the new system is active.
Next Steps for Agencies and Subscribers
OnSolve is transitioning customers to CodeRED by Crisis24, which utilizes backup data current as of March 31, 2025. Local emergency management partners have been advised to update their contact lists and configurations within the new platform.
Residents will receive additional instructions once Campbell County begins the process of onboarding to the new system.
Commitment to Transparency and Safety
Campbell County Public Safety remains committed to keeping the public informed as we receive updates from OnSolve and as our own systems transition. We regret any inconvenience caused by this incident and appreciate the community’s patience as this matter continues to be addressed.
Further updates will be shared as they become available.
