Campbell County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Make Narcotics Arrest in Early Morning Traffic Stop
RUSTBURG, VA — On the morning of January 14, 2026, at approximately 1:30 a.m., Campbell County deputies, along with K-9 assistance from the Altavista Police Department, conducted a traffic stop on a white Nissan sedan that resulted in the seizure of suspected illegal narcotics.
During the stop, deputies identified a passenger, John Thompson, 37, of Forest, Virginia, who was found to be in possession of multiple controlled substances. The items seized during the investigation included:
- Approximately 35 grams of suspected fentanyl
- Approximately 75 grams of psilocybin mushrooms
- Various unidentified pills
- Crack cocaine
- Marijuana
- U.S. currency
At this time, Thompson has been charged with Possession With Intent to Distribute (PWID) related to the suspected psilocybin mushrooms. Additional charges may be sought pending analysis and confirmation of the remaining substances by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science.
