Statement from the Campbell County Registrar's Office:

VA Code 24.2-115 states, “if practicable, officers shall be appointed from lists of nominations filed by the political parties entitled to appointments. The party shall file its nominations with the secretary of the electoral board at least 10 days before February 1 each year.” The Campbell County Registrar’s Office and Electoral Board have assigned all election officials that were available to work on November 4 from the list provided by the Republican Party. The Democratic Party did not provide a list of nominations.

The list filed in the suit was an outdated list at the time of filing with the court. VA Code 24.2-115 also states as follows: “Upon request and at a reasonable charge not to exceed the actual cost incurred, the secretary of the electoral board or the general registrar shall provide a copy of the list of the officers of election, including their party designation and precinct to which they are assigned, to any requesting political party or candidate.” A list has not been requested by either party for several weeks.

Our list of election official assignments does change frequently leading up to the election due to officials’ availability on election day. The Campbell County Registrar’s Office and Electoral Board make decisions on placement based on many factors including but not limited to party affiliation, precinct location, skillset and an official’s willingness to be a chief or assistant chief on election day. We work closely with the Campbell County Attorney and VA Department of Elections to ensure we are following the code. The VA Code does not allow any political party the authority to require placement of specific officials in specific precincts.

The Campbell County Registrar’s Office and Electoral Board hold fair and safe elections for all citizens and follow the VA Election laws as set forth by the General Assembly. Citizens are always encouraged to reach out to the Registrar’s Office to learn of security measures and standard election processes.
