Anyone may report suspected child abuse and neglect; however,
pursuant to the Code of Virginia, certain professionals are required to
report. These professionals include:
Accredited Christian Science practitioners
Child care providers
Court certified mediators
Hospital residents or interns
Law enforcement officers
Mental health practitioners
Nurses
Probation officers
Professional staff employed by a hospital, institution, or facility in which children are placed
Social workers
Teachers
Volunteer, court appointed special advocates
Persons licensed to practice medicine or any of the healing arts
Persons associated with or employed by any private organization responsible for the care, custody, and control of children
