Campbell County Sheriff Steve Hutcherson was presented with the Freedom Fighter Award by the Campbell County Branch of the NAACP on Oct. 15 at the organization’s annual Freedom Banquet.
Kelvin Fore, one of the leaders of the local branch of the NAACP, said the Freedom Fighter Award is given to a member of the organization who has provided outstanding service to the community. Fore said Hutcherson has attended meetings and interacted with other members and has provided them with updates of what was going on in the community, including hiring plans of the Sheriff’s Office.
Hutcherson said he was humbled and honored to receive the award. He said he joined the NAACP several years ago because he wanted to get feedback from all parts of the county, including feedback on how to increase job applications to the Sheriff’s Office from minorities.
Hutcherson said he also wanted all people in Campbell County to know that the Sheriff’s Office existed to serve them, and he wanted a department that all residents could be proud of.
